Successful Stories
Perhaps the best testimonial we can provide is one given by the caregiver of one of our guests when she was describing the isolation and sadness that often accompanies this disease:
"No one wants to take the time for someone like this. My husband and I are together every moment of every day, except for the time he spends at ExtraCare. I don't know what I would do without this time for myself. And, it gives him something to look forward to."
Individual Attention
In a recent Support Group meeting one caregiver described what she sees ExtraCare doing for her husband:
"People in the general public just shy away from or ignore someone like my husband. And who knows, maybe I would too, under different circumstances. But at ExtraCare he gets attention. What it all boils down to is making him feel like someone, like he still amounts to something."
Providing a Safe Place
A thank you note received stated “I thank God every week for ExtraCare and all it’s volunteers for the wonderful care and activities they provide for my husband and all the wonderful people who attend. It is gratifying and so comforting to know he is ok while I am busy with my responsibilities. God bless you all”
Increasing Life
Studies show that people with dementia who participate in program, such as ExtraCare, have a significantly slower rate of decline than those who do not. ExtraCare also enables caregivers to take advantage of time away to address personal matters or merely rest and recuperate. Caregivers deserve and need a break for themselves.
